There are a number of things that have to be addressed when it comes to software development team communication:
- Silos. If there is more than one team involved in the project, folks, you to face the possibility that information needed by more than one team in order to get the job done might not be shared between teams. This is a classic cause in many cases of project failure and has to be addressed long before it happens.
- Personality issues. There are many people who are introverted in IT and don’t have good social skills. These people require careful handling when it comes time to getting them to share their thoughts and ideas, and you have to make it clear that they need to let people know when there’s a problem that has them stumped. This is especially true if the person involved has Asperger’s. You have to know where they are on the spectrum. If this team member has run across a problem that he or she has found to be technically troublesome, get scared. People who have Asperger’s usually are born IT people who are VERY talented. Only an idiot won’t hire them —— and if they say that there’s trouble, people, then devote resources to solving that problem and make sure that lines of communication are wide open.
- Trust issues. You have to make it clear that it’s OK to speak the truth about problems that they have run across without fear of retribution for having said so.
